Senators were poised for a showdown this morning as the Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission pushes for the confirmation of Prof. Sani Adams whose nomination and that of a presidential aide, Lauretta Onochie, were not cleared by the Senate on Tuesday.
Adams’ confirmation was stepped down because of petitions of alleged harassment against him during his days as a lecturer at the University of Jos, while Onochie on the other hand was rejected based on issues bordering on federal character as there’s already someone at the INEC from her area.
The Senate decided to step Adam’s nomination was stepped down because the matter is still pending before the Supreme Court.
But it has been revealed that the INEC panel Chairman, Senator Kabiru Gaya, allegedly summoned a meeting Wednesday night with a sole agenda of clearing Adams.
The development according to investigation is causing lots of problems at the Senate as some Senators have vowed to resist such a move with all that they got at their disposal.
A member of the panel even said that he got the invitation at about 9pm on Wednesday for the meeting scheduled for 80:00am today.
“I don’t know what impression we are creating in the minds of members of the public by rescinding a decision we took barely 24 hours.
“Why can’t we wait until the matter is decided by the Supreme Court before reopening it?” he fumed.
