COURT GRANTS BAIL TO IGBOHO’S 12 DETAINED ASSOCIATES, OVERRULES THE DSS

The 12 persons that were arrested at the residence of Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho have been granted bail by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday.

The Department of State Services, DSS, opposed the release of four out of the 12 persons, but Justice Obiora Egwuatu admitted the detainees to bail after he overruled the DSS.

The DSS opposed the bail granted them on the ground that its investigations revealed that the four detainees were deeply involved in the stock piling of arms at Igboho’s home.

They are Amudat Habitat Babatunde, Abideen Shittu, Jamiu Noah Oyetunji and Bamidele Sunday.

But it did not oppose the release of eight others arrested because according to the DSS, they had minimal involvement in Igboho’s alleged criminal activities.

They are Abdulateef Ademola Onaolapo, Tajudeen Irinyole, Diekola Jubril Ademola, Ayobami Donald and Uthman Opeyemi Adelabu.

In his ruling, Justice Egwuatu said that the Constitution empowered the court to exercise its discretionary powers to grant the Applicant bail.

The judge granted bail to the eight detainees which in the sum of N5million with two sureties each.

The court however, granted the other four detainees bail in the sum of N10m with two sureties each.

The sureties must be resident in Abuja and one of them must be a civil servant not below grade level 12, who must submit a letter of employment and last promotion letter, as well as tender a passport photograph, evidence of payment of tax for the past three years and also depose to an affidavit of means.

The court mandated the four detainees whose bail request was opposed, to report to the office of the DSS every first Monday of the month, for three months, starting from September 1.

But the court declined an application for all the detainees to be transferred to a Correctional Centre, pending the perfection of their bail conditions.
