DISQUALIFIED NIGERIAN OLYMPIC ATHLETES PROTEST IN TOKYO

Instead of competing for and winning medals like others from other countries in Tokyo, Team Nigeria’s athletes are instead protesting the ‘shame’ brought upon the country by negligent sports administrators.

10 of the country’s athletes were disqualified from taking part in the Olympic Games due to their failure to undertake the mandatory three out-of-competition tests expected of athletes taking part in a competition.

The Sports Ministry labelled those affected athletes ‘alternate and foreign student athletes, whose tests did not meet with sample collection and analysis standards’.

This angered the athletes and they decided to stage a protest to register their displeasure.

What is the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development doing?

What is the job of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN)?

How can the Nigeria Olympic Committee, (NOC) all this to happen?

Isn’t it the job of the above-mentioned Ministry and agencies to ensure the athletes undergo all the required tests in the build-up to the Olympics as prescribed by the World Athletics rules?

The aforementioned Ministry and agencies should be blamed for this national embarrassment and heads should roll.

The athletes were seen carrying different placards with the inscriptions: “All we wanted to do is to compete”, “Why should we suffer because of someone else’s negligence?”, “We are not just alternatives but are potential medalists”,
