Some unknown gunmen have Tuesday killed Chike Akunyili, a prominent medical doctor and husband of late NAFDAC chief Dora Akunyili.
Akunyili was returning to Enugu from a meeting in Onitsha when the gunmen opened fire on his vehicle, killing him instantly with his driver and Police orderly,
It was learnt that Chike Akunyili was shot on Tuesday night near Onitsha, the commercial hub of Anambra State, on his way from his late wife’s memorial lecture in Onitsha and was going back to Enugu and was shot by unknown gunmen.
His wife, was former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), died in an Indian hospital on June 7th, 2014 at the age of 57 after a prolonged ailment.
She was the DG of NAFDAC from 2001 to 2008.
Chike’s brother, Cyril Akunyili in an Instagram post on Wednesday said: “IPOB killed my senior brother. Why? Husband of Prof Dora Akunyili is dead. IPOB why on a Tuesday?”
He later deleted the post.
The remains of the three had since been deposited at the hospital ahead of Police investigation and burial.
Mr Akunyili until his death was running St Leo’s Hospital, one of the biggest hospitals in Enugu.
He graduated first class and spent his professional career treating citizens across the country, including many on charitable grounds.
This is another tragedy and the rising insecurity situation in the country.
This is one death too many, coming few weeks after Sowore’s younger brother was killed.
Hopelly the killers will be found this time around.
