Since he was declared wanted by the DSS after they raided his house, killing 2 and arresting 12, Sunday Igboho had been on the run.

To forestall his escape from the country, the Federal Government was said to have placed the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Customs Service on top alert.

Besides waiting for him at the airports, the Government beefed-up security at Iwajowa, Saki West and Ibarapa Local Government Areas of Oyo State which were adjoining areas to the Benin Republic.

Igboho finally escaped the security apparatus in the areas to the Benin Republic where he was scheduled to catch a flight to Germany.

He made it to the airport, beating all the security traps set for him at the borders. At the airport, the immigration officers suspected the passport. They later realized it was him, but he was able to leave the airport as discussion was on-going.

He was later called back by the travel agent called and made to believe that the matter had been resolved. He was arrested by the Interpol alongside his wife on getting back to the airport instead.

The Nigerian Ambassador to Benin Republic, retired General and immediate past Chief of  Army Staff, (COAS) Tukur Buratai who was part of the manhunt for Igboho was made aware of his Igboho’s arrest and has been trying hard to extradite him to Nigeria.

Buratai sent a letter through the Nigerian Embassy in Benin Republic to the Ministry of External Affairs in Benin Republic, External Affairs contacted the Internal Affairs Ministry, Internal Affairs Ministry on the hand sent the Interpol to effect the arrest of Igboho.

The German Embassy in Benin Republic was said to be intervening in the matter because Igboho’s wife is a German citizen.

We are watching to see how this pans out. Whether he will be allowed to continue his journey to Germany, extradited to Nigeria to face prosecution or remain in detention in Benin Republic.
