Daniel ‘Dan De Bull’ Amokachi, former Super Eagles striker, has revealed that he and his team mates were compensated with $20,000 each, for pulling out of the Africa Cup of Nations event in 1996, which was staged in South Africa, by the then Head of State, the late General Sani Abacha.
Amokachi who revealed this on Sports radio 88.9 FM said the players could have gotten up to $35,000 each if they had gone to the Nations Cup as they were inform and confident of getting to the final of the competition.
He calculated the amount based on the fact they were billed to play seven matches to the final and get $5,000 each as a bonus for every game.
Amokachi said that Abacha held a meeting with the team at the Aso Rock villa and told them that the issue between Nigeria and South Africa was just political and it had nothing to do with football.
Amokachi said: “That year we knew we had a great team that can win the championship and we were already looking forward to a wonderful event in South Africa.”
