Students of the University of Benin on Wednesday blocked the busy Benin/Lagos highway in support of the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities who began a one-month strike on Monday.
Some of them are see carrying placards that read “5 Year’s course cannot be 10 years. FG end ASUU strike now”
The students blocked the ever-busy road as they came out in their numbers to protest against the strike action. Reports even allege that the students turned the Benin-Lagos road into a temporary “football field”.
The students’ leaders were also seen giving out soft drinks, snacks and water to the protesting students as “refreshments”.
Foster Amadin, the SUG president of UNIBEN told newsmen that the students are tired of the recurring ASUU strike. He lamented that many students now spend over five years studying a four-year course due to ASUU strikes. Foster Amadin also confirmed that the students have not received any lecture for the past two days. He said that lecturers told them ASUU is on a 1-month warning strike already.
